CITRIC BLEND CLEANING SOLVENT
Why risk the high toxicity and flammability of a pure petroleum solvent when this more user-friendly citric and naptha blend does a great job? It efficiently cleans ski and snowboard topsheets, sidewalls, bases, diamond stones, etc...and dries quickly, too. Just pour a little on a sheet of fiberlene, base tex paper, or shop towel and wipe off unwanted dirt, wax, grime or grunge. Although most folks prefer to use it straight, the naptha in this citric blend allows it to be diluted with water if desired. As with any cleaning solvent, use with adequate ventilation. PETROLEUM CLEANING SOLVENT
Although we personally prefer using citric blend solvent for health and safety reasons, we also offer this petroleum-based recipe for those who prefer a traditional solvent. WAX IRON TEMPERATURE PLATFORM
A wax iron that's too hot can cause at least three problems. First, excess heat can oxidize p-tex base material, literally sealing the surface so it's unable to absorb all the wax it should. Second, it causes a certain amount of base structure to be lost due to heat deformation of the p-tex. Third, too much heat creates not only more wax smoke, but...especially in the case of fluorocarbon waxes...potentially dangerous fumes as well. It's recommended to use the lowest temperature setting possible to hot wax with your iron. Monitor the temperatures you need for different waxes (warmer for hard waxes, cooler for soft waxes) with this precision-milled, fully-anodized aluminum platform. PRO-TEC RESPIRATOR
Protect your lungs from hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon wax smoke, wax remover fumes, repair material smoke, etc. This respirator uses two filters to screen out organic vapors, acid gas, dust, radionuclides, smoke and mist. It features a non-allergenic PVC face seal to fit most faces (unless small or very large).

To check fit, put the respirator on, cover the filter intakes and breathe in a little...a vacuum should form for a good mask seal on your face. If it doesn't, please send it back. Also, when not in use, store your respirator and any spare filters in an airtight plastic zip-lock bag...otherwise they keep filtering air continually and need replacement more frequently. Clean the inside of your mask regularly with a clean rag and replace filters when you can begin smelling any smoke with respirator on.

A Swedish scientific study of ski technicians who waxed x-c skis frequently was made in 1989. The study was of technicians who did bulk ski waxing over a five-day period. It was determined that their breathing capacity was reduced 10-25% by exposure to smoke from hot waxing. And this study only involved standard hydrocarbon waxes...not the fluorocarbon waxes commonly used today (see Fluorocarbons vs. Flames). Always wax in a well-ventilated area, monitor your wax iron temperature to avoid overheating wax and creating more smoke, and wear a respirator. Wear gloves when working with any solvents (such as base cleaner) and protect your eyes, hands, and clothing.

WAX WHIZARD

WAX CORK
Use a cork to rub in wax when you don't have a wax iron. After rubbing wax or fluoro additives on a base, tip the cork up on a long edge and rub hard using a healthy dose of elbow grease...this will create heat that melts wax on the p-tex base. PLASTIC SCRAPER SHARPENING SCREEN
Our sharpening screen is handy for keeping the edge on your plastic wax scraper clean and crisp. Simply lay the screen down on a flat workbench. Then, bearing down slightly, slide the long edge of the scraper down the length of the screen. The screen's abrasive coating cuts away a little plastic with each stroke...so keep stroking until the scraper edge feels square and sharp.
